تلقى تعليمه بالكتّاب ليحفظ القرآن ويتزود ببعض مبادئ اللغة العربية، وتلقى تعليمه الثانوي بتونس العاصمة. سافر إلى فرنسا عام 1968 لمزاولة تعلمه العالي، وشارك في بعث لجان فلسطين للتعريف بالقضية الفلسطينية في الأوساط الطلابية والعمالية بفرنسا. تحصل على الأستاذية في الأدب الفرنسي المعاصر عام 1972. درّس بالمعهد الفرنسي (ليسي كارنو) ثم بقابس، والزهراء. سافر إلى العراق عام 1979 للعمل ضمن اتفاقيات التعاون الفني بين العراق وتونس، وانتدب كأستاذ للغة والآداب الفرنسية بالجامعة المستنصرية ببغداد. عاد إلى تونس عام 1982 ورجع إلى تدريس اللغة الفرنسية في معهد الزهراء. اشتغل بالسياسة وانخرط عام 1985 بحركة الديمقراطيين الاشتراكيين. غادر حزب حركة الديمقراطيين الاشتراكيين عام 1995 وتفرغ للكتابة الأدبية منذ ذلك الوقت.
