إن الناظر في كتب الطبقات والتراجم والتاريخ وحتى كتب الفرق والمقالات والعقائد يمكن أن يتبين دون صعوبة كبيرة أن منزلة الصحابة في الضمير الإسلامي قد شهدت تحولات كثيرة، فالواضح أنه لم تكن لهم المكانة الكبيرة التي اكتسبوها لاحقاً في التاريخ بعد استقرار المذاهب الكلامية وقيام العلوم الإسلامية من تفسير وحديث وفقه وغيرها، ويمكننا القول إنه بداية من القرن الثالث بالخصوص، أي في الفترة اللاحقة للتدوين...
في مثل هذه السياقات العامة نحاول قراءة أخبار الصحابة وفضائلهم في كتب الحديث، وكيف صاغت لهم المرويات والأخبار صوراً تنأى بهم عن إكراهات السياسة والاجتماع، يقبلها الضمير ويستسيغها فلا يتم التطرّق إلى ما يخدش صورة الصحابة المثالية، تلك الصورة التي انبت عليها المؤسسة الدينية بما يروى عن سلوك الصحابة وأخلاقهم ومعاملاتهم وعلمهم وكل ما يتعلق بهم. إن صورة الصحابة بهذا المعنى هي المشكلة للمؤسسة الدينية التي تعتبر ضرباً من ضروب التمثل الاجتماعي، ترى المجموعة نفسها فيها وتسقط عليها أحلامها وجطموحاتها، وتجعل منها مثالاً للاقتداء.
والأسئلة المطروحة هنا كيف تشكّلت تلك الصورة؟ وكيف نظرت أجيال المسلمين المتلاحقة إلى الصحابة؟ وما هي وظائف تلك الصورة في التاريخ؟
