يعد كتاب "مرآة المحاسن بأخبار الشيخ أبي المحاسن) لبنة مهمة من ضمن الكتب التي درست التاريخ المغربي عموماً، فهو إلى إختصاص موضوعه بترجمة الشيخ يوسف بن محمد الفاسي الفهري - شيخ الطريقة الشاذلية بفاس والمغرب في وقته - فقد ملأه المؤلف الشيخ أبو حامد العربي بن يوسف الفاسي بعدة فوائد إستطرادية هامة بخصوص التاريخ المغربي في الحقبة السعدية، مع ما حواه من تراجم عشرات الأعلام المغاربة الذين عاشوا تلك الحقبة، والذين يعد هذا الكتاب أول من تطرق لتراجمهم، وقد يكون المرجع الوحيد في ذلك.
إضافة إلى تطرق المؤلف في كتابه إلى العديد من الفوائد في مختلف العلوم والمعارف، وتعريفه لعدة مواضع ومواقع مهمة في المغرب، بحيث يعد موسوعة مصغرة استفاد منها أغلب من جاء بعده في مختلف مجالات المعرفة.
وقد صدره المحقق بدراسة مسهبة عن التصوف في المغرب، رابطاً إياه بتاريخ الأدارسة ودولتهم، وعن تاريخ الطريقة الشاذلية في المغرب وسيرورتها، إضافة إلى تاريخ العائلية الفاسية الفهرية التي كان لها دور أساس في إثراء المعرفة بالمغرب، وختمه بأحد عشر فهرساً تفصيلياً بحيث يتيسر الوقوف على أي معلومة فيه، مع إثباته لجميع الطرر والفوائد التي وقف عليها بنسخ الكتاب التي اعتمدها في التحقيق.
