إن علم السنة النبوية بعد الكتاب العزيز أعظم العلوم قدراً وأرقاماً شرفاً، إذ عليه مبنى قواعد الأحكام الشرعية الإسلامية، وبه تظهر مجملات الآيات القرآنية، لذا كان اهتمام علماء الأمة من السلب منصباً على الأحاديث النبوية، وكان لهم فيها تصانيف اشتهر منها كتاب الإمام البخاري الذي حاز قصب السبق في صحيح الأحاديث، حيث أتى فيه من صحيح الحديث وفقهه بما لم يسبقه إليه أحد، فانفرد بكثرة فرائد فوائده وزوائده وعوائده، حتى جزم الراوون بأولويته على غيره في ذاك المجال.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب تنادى علماء الأمة لشرحه إلا أن لشرح الإمام القسطلاني مكانته من بين الشروح حيث يقول عن شرحه هذا: "ولطالما خطر في الخاطر المخاطر أن أعلق عليه شرحاً أمزجه فيه مزجاً وأدرجه ضمنه درجاً، رافعاً النقاب عن وجوه معانيه لمعانيه، موضحاً مشغله فاتحاً مقله مقيّداً مهمله، وافياً بتغليق تعليقه، كافياً في إرشاد الساري لطريق تحقيقه، محرراً رواياته، معرباً عن غرائبه وخفياته".
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن الإمام القسطلاني قام بإغناء الكتاب بمواضيع هامة هي في معرض ذلك علم الحديث حيث تحدث عن فضيلة أهل الحديث وشرفهم في القديم والحديث، مبيناً من ثم الأوائل ممن دونوا الحديث والسنن، معقباً ذلك بنبذة لطيفة جامعة لفرائد مصطلح الحديث، ومن ثم بلمحة فيما يتعلق بالبخاري في صحيحه من تقرير شرطه وتحريره وضبطه وترجيحه وفي ذكر نسب البخاري ونسبته ومولده، لينتقل من ثم إلى شرح صحيح البخاري.
كتاب مرجع في فقه الحديث وهو شرح على أصح الكتب بعد القرآن وهو صحيح البخاري، اعتمد فيه مصنفه على شرح السند والمتن أي نص الحديث وهو يشرح المفردات ويبين ما يستنبط من الحديث أيضا معتمدا على أقوال وآراء أهل العلم والفقه.
