"مرآة الأيام" كتاب في التاريخ العام، أراده المؤلف أن يكون مختصراً يرجع إليه الراغب في الوقوف على مجرى الأحداث والوقائع، والتزم فيه سرد الحوادث الموثوق بصحبتها، وذكر مواقعها، مقتصراً في ذلك على تجنب الأقوال المختلفة في الكثير منها. وقد عقد المؤلف فصولاً يذكر فيها أخبار الأمة العربية وما اشتهر عنها، فوقف طويلاً عند تواريخ الدول الشرقية والإسلامية منها على وجه الخصوص.
والكتاب يقع في أقسام، بحث فيها أولاً أصول الأمم وأصول لغاتها وأوائل أحوالها المعاشية والمدنية، ثم بحث تاريخ اليونانيين في الأزمنة الأولى والتاريخ الروماني منذ تشييد مدينة روقة، حتى الحروب الأهلية الأولى وانقراض السلطة الغربية. كما عرض لأحداث القرون الوسطى، متحدثاً عن البرابرة وممالكهم الكبرى، ثم تاريخ السلطنة الشرقية، وقيام دولة الخلفاء الراشدين، ودولة الأمويين، ودولة العباسيين ثم قيام الدولة العثمانية والحروب الصليبية في الشرق والغرب. كما يخصص قسماً من الكتاب للحديث عن تاريخ الأمصار الحديثة والمعاصرة.
