إن العقل المتتبع بإمعان لمسيرة تطور الحضارة الغربية على مر الزمن، يدرك بوضوح وجود فترات من التوتر والتصدع في تاريخ الإنسان، تميزت بالإنقلاب والثورة على القيم الإستبدادية والأفكار الخرافية اللاهوتية، ومبرر ذلك أن كل تفكير خرافي أسطوري، لا يمكن تداوله في آفاق مستقبل مغاير لما كان سائداً قبل وعي الإنسان الغربي بضرورة التجديد مؤمن بمستقبل أفضل، لهذا فإن أولى أزمات الإنسان الغربي التخلي عما كان يعتقد فيه.
إن ثورة الإنسان الغربي على عصر كان يحجب فيه الحق ويقصى جهد من خالف أحكام أهل القداسة الكنائيسية هي ثورة واعية، يبحث فيها عن الحقيقة واليقين، رافضاً كل أشكال الرضوخ والإستسلام للقوانين التي تتحكم فيه، وتسيره بالتفكير والكشف عن مجاهيل الكون إلا أن ما ترتب عن هذه الثورات التي تسبب فيها الإنسان، هو تفشي نوع من الإضطراب والفوضى بسبب حداثتها ووسط هذه الظروف التي عمها الخوف، والهلع الذي كان يستولي على النفوس كان هناك من يثق بمستقبل أفضل للإنسان، وإنهاء الأزمة وتمهيداً إلى طريق نظام جديد، فقد قضت الحداثة الغربية الحديثة طفولتها القوية إبان النهضة، وعصر الإصلاح الديني وهي على ثقة تامة بقيمة الإنسان وقدرته على الخلق والإبداع، فلم يعد يهم الإنسان في زمن العقل والتصنيع، سوى المعرفة العلمية التي مكنت الإنسان من التحرر من قيود الطبيعة ودفعته إلى المشاركة الفعالة في تحقيق التقدم، فبفضل الإكتشافات العلمية التي لا حصر لها، والتي كان لها وقع كبير في تحويل مسيرة التاريخ إلى ما يعرف بالعصرية أو التقدم، أو ما يصطلح عنه بالحداثة حسب أغلبية المفكرين التي حملت في طيات مشروعها أمالاً عريضة في تحقيق العدالة والمساواة بين الناس، والمجتمع الواحد وتحقيق التقدم التكنولوجي، وضمان إستقرار الإنسان وسعادته.
