كان لظهور نظام التشغيل windows أثراً كبيراً في تغيير العديد من المفاهيم البرمجية، وظهر العديد من لغات البرمجة التي تساعد في كتابة تطبيقات قوية لهذا النظام معتمدة على تلك المفاهيم الجديدة.
ولعل لغة Visual Basic، هي من اللغات البسيطة والسهلة، والشائعة أيضاً، ولكن بساطتها وسهولتها لا تعيقان إمكاناتها، إذ يمكن بوساطة هذه اللغة كتاب تطبيقات تجارية احترافية كتلك المكتوبة بأي لغة أخرى.
والسر الذي يكمن في تلك القوة هو قدرة هذه اللغة على الوصول إلى وظيفة من وظائف النظام windows الأساسية (كالتعامل مع الملفات والذاكرة والإظهار الرسومي و...) وهذه الوظائف والإجراءات تسمى: API (أي واجهة مبرمج التطبيقات).
ولكن المشكلة تكمن في مراجع هذه الوظائف، صحيح أن Microsoft قد وثقت كل وظائفها ولكن هذا التوثيق موجه لمبرمجي c و++c بالإضافة إلى أنها باللغة الإنكليزية.
ورغم انتشار العديد من المراجع العربية في لغة Visual Basic إلا أن كلاً منهال يذكر عدداً ضئيلاً من هذه الوظائف، ويعرض عن الخوض في التفاصيل وبذلك تجد المبرمج العربي يبحث عن تلك الوظائف وشروحاتها ضمن هذه الكتب، كالذي يبحث عن غبرة في كومة من القش.
يعرض هذا الكتاب معظم وظائف API الممكن استخدامها مع Visual Basic، مع وصف دقيق لكلٍ منها وما يحتاجه من وسطاء وما يعيده من قيم، كل هذا باللغة العربية، ومن وجهة نظر مبرمج Visual Basic إضافةً إلى عدد كبير من الأمثلة التوضيحية التي تشرح آلية عمل هذه الوظائف.
