من وجهة النظر القرائية التفكيكية يستجيب ميللر إلى الاهتمام الحالي الواسع الانتشار اليوم الذي يربط الأدب بالمجتمع والتاريخ والسياسة، ولكنه هنا، في هذا الكتاب، يدرس الجانب الأخلاقي في الدراسة الأدبية، وذلك من خلال الاشتغال على نصوص فلسفية وأدبية لعدد من كبار المؤلفين مثل كانط وجورج أليوت، وهنري جيمس. وهي المنطقة التي لم يناقشها النقاد التفكيكيون. ويسهم هذا الكتاب إسهاماً كبيراً في وضع أسئلة مثل هذه في برنامج للنقاش الجاد.
