أمضى إحسان عباس جلّ حياته باحثاً ومؤلفاً للكتب، ومحققاً مدققاً في المخطوطات، وبلغت الكتب التي ألفها ثلاثين كتاباً، والمخطوطات التي حققها أربعة وأربعين مصنفاً ومخطوطاً، وتبلغ كتبه التي ترجمها أحد عشر كتاباً من أهمها رواية موبي ديك لهرمان ملفل.
يتضح لمتتبع أبحاث د. إحسان عباس ودراساته النقدية أنه تبنى المنهج التاريخي أو النقد التاريخي. لقد بدأ ذوقياً انطباعياً، ثم تحول الى ناقد يركز على المضمون، ثم أضاف معياراً آخر في نقده هو البحث في فنية الأثر، لذا تجمعت في شخصية د. إحسان عباس الأدبية والفكرية والنقدية، المهارة الذوقية الإنطباعية التي تجعل صاحبها قريباً من النقد التأثري، مع استجابة أسطورية تاريخية رمزية للحدث والموضوع، وخبرة فنية أدبية متراكمة أهلته للإحاطة بالشيفرة السردية في رموز الشعر والقصة والرواية، واستجلاء خفايا الزوايا في بنيتها الداخلية والتي يمكن إدراكها عن طريق التفسير الرمزي.
