يذكر مؤلف الكتاب ابن هذيل سبب تأليفه الكتاب: "إنَّ من أعظم الفوائد قدراً، وأشرف المعاني ذكراً أنْ يرفع فمن من العلم نبيل، إلى مقام ملك جليل، فذلك هو الذي أوجب على العبد تأليف هذا الكتاب وتلخيصه، وتهذيبه، وتمحيصه، فهو يشتمل على جلاد وكفاح، وخيل وسلاح.
وكذلك: ومولانا - نصر الله - ملك الدنيا الذي وقع عليه الإجماع، والأصفاق، والتأمَ الإتفاق، وتحدث بسيرته الجميلة الرفاق، فتشوّقت إليه الشام، والعراق، واليُمن مكتف بسلطانهن والظفر مبتسم عن سنانه، والتُّجمع عاقد لواءه، والحمد نسج ردائه، فجعل الله سبحانه شعاره الجهاد، وتسنيمه سلوك سبيل الرشاد، وعادت به جزيرة الأندلس في حرز من نزعات الفتن، وحفظ من لَزباتِ الإحن".
وقد رفع المؤلف كتابه إلى أمير المؤمنين المستعين بالله أبي عبد الله بن محمد بن يوسف بن محمد بن يوسف بن إسماعيل بن نصر، الذي تولى ملك دولة بني الأحمر سنة 797هـ بعد موت أبيه السلطان يوسف، وهو الحادي عشر من ملوك بني الأحمر.
