في كتابه هذا، يتناول الدكتور "الكبير الداديسي" بعض جوانب الحداثة الشعرية العربية (بين الممارسة والتنظير) فيتتبع مفهوم الحداثة وتاريخها في مجال الشعر ولا سيما محطات التجديد، ليؤكد أن الشعر العربي، أو الحداثة الشعرية العربية، لها جذور في تراثنا الشعري كما لها جذور خارج ثقافتنا العربية.
وفي هذا الإطار يرصد المؤلف تجربة "نازك الملائكة" ومساهمتها في التنظير لهذا الميدان، محاولاً البحث عن جذور حداثة نازك للقول أنها لم تكن أول من خرج على نظام الخليل، وأن ما أتت به له ما يربطه بتراثنا الشعري أو بالتراث الغربي، ولكن تبقى _ على ما يرى المؤلف – أول من خسف عين الشعر الحر لأنها استطاعت أن تفرض هذه الطريقة في الكتابة على الساحة الأدبية العربية، ليس لأنها كتبت على هذه الطريقة، بل لأنها واكبتها – حتى وقفت على رجلها – بكتابات نقدية تنظر فيها لهذا المولود الجديد.
ووفقاً لتلك الرؤية بدا المؤلف مستتبعاً مواطن الجدة في تنظيرات نازك فهي رغم دعوتها وتحمسها إلى التجديد، فإنها رفضت على ما سنرى في هذه الدراسة أن يكون تخلياً كلياً وانفصالاً تاماً عما خلفه أسلافنا الشعراء، لذلك هاجمت نازك الشعراء المتطرفين، مما جعل النقاد الأكثر حداثة يتهمونها بخيانة حركة الحداثة الشيء الذي جعل المؤلف يتطرق إلى الإتهامات التي وجهت في الجزء الثاني من ديوانها، وذلك على مستوى الإيقاع (الأوزان والقوافي) لنكتشف مع المؤلف أن شعرها – كباقي الشعر – الحديث يتميز بالغموض والغرابة وتوظيف الإسطورة، ولم تستطع أن تلزم نفسها بجميع القوانين التي سنتها وذلك طبيعي، فشتان بين القول والفعل، وبين التنظير والممارسة.
