يبدو أنّ قضايا المعجم عامة والمعجم العربي خاصة كانت حتى أواسط القرن الماضي عسيرة معقّدة، وقد مثّلت المجال الأضعف في الدرس اللغوي، وفي واقعه العملي تنظيراً وتطبيقاً، فكثيراً ما نُظر إلى منجزات التراث على أنّها كبرياء هذه اللغة، وعُدَّ الموروث المعجميّ ناجزاً منتهياً، فلم نستشعر الحاجة إلى إعادة النظر في ما يبدو حكماً متشدّداً لم يعد ما يبرّره اليوم في ظلّ ظهور منهجيات حديثة في الدّرس اللساني وفي قوانين التحوّل وقواعد التوليد في اللغات لإستيعاب مظاهر التطور الإنسانيّ دون تفريط في خصائص اللغة.
وفي حين وضعت في الغرب لذلك التطور مبادئ وقواعد أصبحت اليوم مباحث لسانية مهمة، ما زال منّا من ينظر إلى ذلك على أنّه لحن وخطأ.
من أجل هذا سعيت في هذه الأبحاث إلى تخليص المعجم العربيّ من التشدّد الصفويّ، وغايتي وضع أسس نظرية ومنهجية توفّر للمعجم العربي أسباب الإنتساب إلى اللسانيات الحديثة وإلى مقارباتها ونظرياتها، فإن كانت دراسة النحو التقليدي العربيّ قد تطور حتى أصبحت جزءاً من اللسانيات، فإنّ المعجم ما أنفكّ مجرّد حرفة ومهارة لا تنتسب إلا قليلاً إلى اللسانيات على ما في مادة المعجم من جدل لغوي ومقاربات لسانية.
