وعليه، تنسج فاطمة عبد الله تصور العمل وغايته إلى حدٍّ ما، فهو شاب جديّ يحب العلم، ومتفوق في الدراسة، يتعرف على جوزيف الشاب المسيحي وتنشأ بينهما صداقة سرعان ما تسفر بالإضافة إلى البحث عن العلم، عن بحثٍ آخر، أعمق، عن معنى الإله، ومفهوم الخلق، وخصائص الدين، وعلاقة الإنسان بأخيه الإنسان أياً كان مذهبه أو دينه...
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "... جوزيف: حسناً، أنا لا أشك أبداً بوجوده إنما أسئلتي عن أمور أخرى كثيرة أحب أن أعرفها، فمثلاً كل شيء في هذا الكون له مسار محدّد وهدف ما، هذا ما أؤمن به... فإلى أين يجب أن أذهب انا وما هو مساري في هذا الكون؟...
حسن: ... في الواقع من الخطأ القول ما هو الهدف من خلق الإنسان، بل يجب أن نقول ما هي الحكمة من ذلك، لأن الله تعالى هو القادر المطلق فلا شيء أقدر منه، وهو الكمال المطلق أي لا شيء أكمل منه، إذن هو لا يحتاج لغاية أو هدف لأنه لا يحتاج للإنسان أساساً فهو الغني دائماً ونحن الفقراء دائماً...".
