إن الرسم ما هو إلا وسيلة للتعبير عن إنفعالات الإنسان وعواطفه، أي أنه تعبير شخصي لخبرة ذهنية أو بصرية في شكل خطوط وتدرج لوني.
فالرسم تركيز وما اليد والعينان إلا معدات طبيعة لنقل هذا التركيز على المادة التي يراد الرسم عليها للتعبير عما يجول في نفس الفنان (الرسام)، فكما يصوغ الشاعر مشاعره في تراكيب لفظية متناسقة ويترجم بالموسيقى إحساسه إلى ألحان متناغمة كذلك يحول الرسام إنطباعاته إلى أشكال وألوان متناسقة بواسطة أدوات خاصة يستخدمها في رسمه.
هذا الكتاب يتناول أساسيات الرسم الحر للفنون التطبيقية وذلك في خمسة وحدات جاء وفق ما يلي: الوحدة الأولى: "الأدوات والمهارات"، الوحدة الثانية: "القواعد الأساسية للرسم"، الوحدة الثالثة: "الطبيعة الصامتة"، الوحدة الرابعة: "مناظر حرة"، الوحدة الخامسة: "الجسم البشري، الجانب العملي".
