المصنف هو الملك المؤيد ابن الملك الأفضل ابن المظفر ابن المنصور بن المظفّر صاحب حماة ولقبه "أبو الفداء" ولد سنة اثنتين وسبعين وسبعمائة بدار الزنجيلي بدمشق، وتوفي سنة اثنتين وثلاثين وسبعمائة. وكان في المؤيد مكارم وفضيلة، من فقه وطب وعلم هيئة وأدب، وكان محباً للعلماء، مقرباً لهم. صنف "تقديم البلدان" وله أيضاً "المختصر في أخبار البشر" الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته، وهو كتاب في التاريخ، أخذه في جلّه عن ابن الأثير مختصراً لكتابه "الكامل في التاريخ" بدءاً بآدم والأحداث التي مرّت بعده حسب الرواية التوراتية، ثم عهد عيسى المسيح حسب ورودها في الإنجيل، وصولاً إلى الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم ونشر الدعوة، وعصر الخلفاء الراشدين ومن تلاحم، والأحداث التي دارت في المنطقة التي امتدت عليها الدعوة الإسلامية على امتداد الأرض العربية وغير العربية على امتداد القارات الثلاث، آسيا، أوربا، أفريقيا. وثم ترتيب التاريخ ضمن فصول خمسة. الأول، في عدد التواريخ القديمة، وذكر الأنبياء عليهم السلام، وحكّام بني إسرائيل. والثاني في ذكر ملوك الفرس، ومن يليق إيراده معهم، والثالث في ذكر الفراعنة، وملوك اليونان، وملوك الروم القياصرة، والرابع في ذكر ملوك العرب. والخامس في ذكر أمم العالم. ويقدم هذا التاريخ للقارئ منقحاً على مصادره الأساسية، ليكون عوناً له على معرفة الأحداث التي دارت في هذه البقعة من العالم، منذ آدم وحتى عام تسع وعشرين وسبعمائة. وتمت متابعة سرد الحوادث حتى سنة تسع وأربعين وسبعمائة، نقلاً من تزييل ابن الوردي على كتاب أبي الفداء.
