الكتاب "تطور الصحافة السورية مائة عام" بجزئيه يعد بحق موسوعة الصحافة السورية... بحث فيه جوزيف الياس تاريخ الصحافة السورية نشأتها، أهدافها، استراتيجياتها، وذلك من خلال بحث مميز، وعمل هو نسيج وحده في دراسة الصحافة العربية، لأن مؤلفه خالف فيه سنة الباحثين وخطط السابقين، فدرس الصحافة السورية اتجاهاتها من خلال مقالاتها الافتتاحية.
تناول المؤلف في جزء الكتاب الأول تاريخ الصحافة في العهد العثماني حيث اعتبر هذا العهد في هذا البحث عصراً من عصور الصحافة السورية. وقسم إلى ثلاث مداخل، أو ثلاثة أدوار، أولها في ظل الحكم العزيز (1865-1876)، وثانيها في ظل الحكم الحميدي (1876-1908) وثالثهما في ظل حكم الاتحاديين (1908-1918).
وأما جزء الكتاب الثاني فقد جاء في ثلاثة أبواب تناول أولها اتجاهات الصحافة وعنى الباب الثاني بدراسة الصحافة اليومية أو السياسية دراسة تطورية وتناول الباب الثالث الصحافة التي تتعدى في دوريتها اليوم الواحد، أو تلك التي ليست وقفاً على السياسة الصرف. واتبعت هذه الأبواب الثلاث بثلاثة ملاحق، ترجم في أولها لأكثر من 600 جريدة ومجلة، وفي الملحق الثاني جعل المؤلف فيه الصحف في فهرس هجائي، وحدد إزاء كل صحيفة أماكن وجودها وما تبقى منها في هذه الأماكن، في حين أفرد الملحق الثالث للقاموس المصور.
