يتكون هذا الكتاب من متن وشرح، ففي المتن ساير "ابن الهمام" الغزالي في رسالته الموجودة في كتاب قواعد العقائد من إحياء علوم الدين، وهي الرسالة المترجمة في القدس، ولذلك سميت بالرسالة القدسية وفيها أربعة أركان، ففي كل ركن عشرة أصول، ثم ختم الغزالي كتابه قواعد العقائد بفصل تحدث فيه عن الإسلام والإيمان وما بينهما من الاتصال وتابعه ابن الهمام في ذلك أيضاً.
بيد أن كتاب ابن الهمام لم يتميز بالاختصار الذي طبع رسالة الغزالي، بل توسع فيه وتعرض لأبرز المسائل المتعلقة بالعقيدة مستحضراً في ذلك كل ما كتبه شيوخ لما تريديه وأحياناً الأشاعرة، فعرفنا بمدرسة مجهولة كالمدرسة السمرقندية وبعض شيوخ ما وراء النهر الذين تضلعوا في أساليب الاستدلال، ولكن مؤلفاتهم لم تنشر الانتشار اللائق في العالم العربي.
وقد اتبع ابن الهمام المنهج نفسه عند تأليقه كتابه المرسوم: "التحرير في أصول الفقه" حيث جمع بين اصطلاحي الشافعية والحنفية، وهنا تراه يجمع بين اصطلاحي الأشاعرة والماتريدية مع التنبيه أحياناً على اصطلاحات السلف، وانفتاحه على المدارس الأخرى، فأحياناً يرجح مذهباً على حساب مذهبه، وحيناً ينتصر بقوة لمذهبه.
ثم جاء أبي شريف من شرحه لهذا الكتاب بالتتمات اللازمة والتعليقات اللائقة لمادة هذا الفن، بأسلوب بسيط-في أغلبه-فكان حواراً فكرياً بين شيخ وتلميذه، وبين ما تريدي وأشعري، متضمناً أكثر من ثمانين كتاباً مرجعاً في العقائد والأصول والفقه والحديث واللغة، ومبتعداً عن الجفاء الذي طبع كثيراً من كتب العقائد، ومحتوياً على غالبية المسائل العقائدية.
