لم يعد التدريس مهنة من لا مهنة له، فمع تطور علم التربية حديثاً أصبح التدريس علماً قائماً بذاته يطلق عليه علم أصول التدريس، بل إن التدريس قد تجاوز حدود العلم إلى مستوى آخر هو الفن، فالبعض يرى أن التدريس بمفهومه الحديث أصبح مزيجاً من: علم يقوم على أساس ومجالات محددة، وفن يتطلب قدرات، ومهارات، وأساليب، وجماليات، ورؤى وأحاسيس، ومشاعر، وتذوق... إلخ.
وقد مر التدريس بمراحل تطورية عديدة، ارتبطت تلك المراحل بمدى تطور مفهومي: التربية عموماً، والتعليم على وجه الخصوص، لذا نرى تبايناً واضحاً في طرق وأساليب التدريس، فتارة تتخذ من المادة التعليمية محوراً لها، وتارة تتخذ من المعلم محوراً لها، وتارة أخرى تتخذ من المتعلم محوراً لها، أو تتخذ من التفاعل بين المعلم والمتعلم محوراً لها.
ويتناول الكتاب بيان تلك الجوانب موضحاً التطورات التي حدثت في مجال التدريس خلال السنوات الأخيرة، والأسس والمهارات التي ينبغي لأي معلم حديث أن يلم بها، بل يتقنها قبل ممارسته للتدريس.
ويشمل الكتاب في طبعته المنقحة سبعة فصول هي: الفصل الأول الذي تناول المفاهيم والمصطلحات الأساسية في مجال المناهج وطرق التدريس، والفصل الثاني الذي تناول منظومة التدريس موضحاً عناصرها ومكوناتها، مدللاً على أهميتها، والفصل الثالث الذي تناول مهارات تخطيط التدريس، والفصل الرابع الذي تناول مهارات تنفيذ التدريس، والفصل الخامس الذي تناول مهارات تقويم التدريس، والفصل السادس الذي تناول المعلم وأدواره وكفايته وتدريبه الميداني، وأخيراً الفصل السابع الذي تناول عرضاً لأهم طرق وأساليب التدريس التي يمكن للمعلم إتبعاها.
