صاحب هذا الديوان هو "عبد الله بن محمد بن عبد الله بن أبي الأقلح" لم تذكر المصادر القديمة، عن أخبار نسبه إلا ما جاء على لسانه مفتخراً به، كان الأحوص الأنصاري شاعراً أموياً غزلاً، متغير المزاج متقلب الأهواء، هجّاءً نزّاعاً إلى الشر بعيداً عن سواء السبيل، فقد أكثر من هجاء أفراد قبيلة. عاش الأحوص فترة شبابه لاهياً مستهتراً يتعاطى الخمر والنساء والعلماء، لا يرده رادّ ولا يمنعه مانع، فسلوكه الشائن كان رمز فخره أحياناً. احتل الأحوص بشعره مكانة هامة بين شعراء الإسلام، فقد عدّه "ابن سلام" في الطبقة السادسة من فحول الإسلاميين، وهو مقدّم عند أهل الحجاز وأكثر الرواة... لأنه أسمحهم طبعاً، وأسلسهم كلاماً، وأصحهم معنى، ولشعره رونق وحلاوة، وعذوبة ألفاظ ليست لأحد. وهو محسن في الغزل والفخر والمدح. لم نجد ذكراً للأحوص الأنصاريين الشعراء الذين عُني العلماء بشعرهم، وعملوا على جمعه منذ القدم، وإنما كل ما وجد هو عدة أخبار قصيرة، وهذا ما دعى الدكتور "محمد نبيل طريفي" إلى جمع وشرح وتحقيق ديوانه هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي يجمع فيه مختلف ما وقف عليه من قصائد الأحوص الأنصاري. وتجلى عمل المحقق بـ" جمع شعر الديوان كله من مصادره القديمة، تخريج الأشعار الواردة في الديوان من مصادر اللغة والأدب المختلفة، شرح جميع الألفاظ الغريبة في الأشعار الواردة في الديوان، مع شرح معاني الشعر التي تحتاج إلى شرح وذلك عبر العودة إلى معاجم اللغة المختلفة. هذا وقد قدم لعمله بمقدمة عرف فيها بالشاعر الأحوص الأنصاري، عارضاً لنسبه وحياته ومكانته الشعرية مبرزاً هذه المكانة بين شعراء عصره.
