يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في فكر ميرزا مهدي الأصفهاني أحد أكبر علماء الشيعة في القرن الرابع الهجري، والذي أدت آراؤه الفقهية والعقدية إلى ظهور حركات وتيارات تجديدية وازدهارها في العديد من الحوزات الدينية، وخاصة في مدينة مشهد (إيران) ؛ ما دفع الكثير من العلماء وطلبة العلوم الدينية إلى الإهتمام بآرائه والبحث في نظرياته.
وبناء عليه، جمع مترجم هذا الكتاب الأستاذ "عباس جواد" مجموعة من الدراسات التي تناولت فكر الأصفهاني والذي عُرف بـ "رائد التفكير في المعرفة الدينية" ونقلها إلى العربية بغية تسليط الضوء على المدرسة التفكيكية، والمساعدة في توضيح المبادىء النظرية العامة التي تؤمن بها هذه المدرسة عبر التعريف بأحد أعلامها، ومن كتبوا في فلسفته الدينية.
وبقراءة متأنية لما تقوله المدرسة التفكيكية وروّادها وعلى رأسهم الميرزا مهدي الأصفهاني، وهو "أن التفلسف لا مشكلة فيه ولا ضير في أن يكون المؤمن فيلسوفاً، أو عارفاً، ولا مشكلة في أن يسعى نحو الحقيقة بقدمي الفلسفة أو العرفان، وأن يشكل عدداً من رؤاه نتيجة مكابدة هذين العلمين، ولكن المشكلة هي في إدخال هذين العلمين إلى ساحة الدين واستخدامهما في فهم النص الديني (...) ومن هنا ندعو المدرسة التفكيكية إلى فك الإرتباط بين الشريعة ومعارف الدين، وبين سائر العلوم كائنة ما كانت؛ ليكون حاصل المعرفة المستفادة من النص الديني دينية صافية ...". في ضوء ما سبق، سيجد القارىء للكتاب أن واقع تيار التفكيك لا يختلف عن حقيقة الإسلام، (القرآن والحديث والسُّنة ومعارف القرآن وتعاليم آل البيت عليهم السلام)، وأنه تيار لم يكن يوماً بحاجة إلى أي اقتباس أو تقليد شخصية أو مدرسة فكرية أو نِحلة أو مذهب ...
