من كتابه هذا يعرّض الكاتب "محمود حسن صافي" مفاصل تاريخية واقعية من تاريخ لبنان الماضي والحاضر ليقول الأبناء الوطن كلمته: "أين نحن اليوم يا أبناء وطني؟ وإلى أين نتجه؟.
بهذا الإحساس الغيور على الوطن وأبناءه يكتب "صافي" "لبنان وطن في براثن المجهول" بقراءة متأنية تتضمن سرد بعض الوقائع المعروفة لديه والنابعة من تجربة ذاتية إلى جانب بعض التحليل الدقيق والهام.
يقول الكاتب عن مؤلفه هذا "... أقدّم لمحة تاريخية موجزة لكي أساهم في إلقاء الضوء على كيفية تركيب صيغة الطوائف في لبنان، وكيف أن الطوائف والمذاهب لم تتعلم وتتّعظ، ولم تضع حلولاً على قياس الوطن، بل على قياس الأفراد! فهل نلوم الشعب الذي رضي - وما زال - بحكّامه؟ أم القادة المتمسكين بسلطاتهم ويظنون أنهم لا يخطئون؟ أم رجال الدين وقادتهم؟ أم على التطرف؟ أم التشريع الذي أصبح من الملزم تغييره في هذا البلد، وقد لا يتعافى إذا استمرّ على ما هوعليه!".
تساؤلات بحجم المسؤولية يطرحها "محمود حسن صافي" تعكس واقعاً متأزماً بين اللبنانيين يحث فيها الأطراف كافة للنهوض من حالة الركود الفكري المتناقض وتلمس جدلية دائمة نحو التقدم، كما أراد "كمال جنبلاط" للبنان، بناء دولة علمانية ديموقراطية لا الإنقياد الأعمر نحو الطائفية...
