في هذا الكتاب تتم دراسة الأفكار الإقتصادية التي ظهرت في مرحلة ما قبل ظهور النظام الرأسمالي، ومن ثم قيام علم الإقتصاد السياسي على أيدي آدم سميث وديفيد ريكاردو والمدارس الإقتصادية التي تركت التأثير الفعّال على تطوّر علم الإقتصاد.
كما درس المؤلف ظهور الأفكار الإشتراكية كرد فعل على الإستغلال الذي سببته الرأسمالية، وفشل هذه الأفكار في مواجهة الرأسمالية، إلى أن ظهرت الإشتراكية العلمية على يد كارل ماركس وفريدريك أنجلس.
وفي الكتاب أيضاً عرض للتطوّرات التي طرأت على الفكر الإقتصادي الرأسمالي الحديث والمأزق الذي وصل إليه هذا الفكر، كما درس بعض مواضيع الإقتصاد السياسي التي أرتأى أهميتها ومنها عوامل الإنتاج، والأجور في النظامين الإشتراكي، والرأسمالي، وتنظيم المشروعات الإنتاجية... وفي الكتاب أيضاً بحث في أسلوب الإنتاج الرأسمالي والأزمات التي يفرزها هذا النظام من جراء التناقض القائم بين الملكية الخاصة لوسائل الإنتاج والطابع الإجتماعي للإنتاج، كما تطرق في الكتاب إلى النظام الإشتراكي والعلاقات التي يفرزها.
