في هذا الكتاب، لا يثير بتلهايم الأسئلة فقط، بل يجيب وبإسهاب، فلا يحاول أن يساعد الأهل فقط في تربية الطفل عن طريق تشريح عالمه ومشاكله وسيروراته الداخلية بل يتطرق أيضاً إلى وضع الأهل ومشاكلهما النفسية والإجتماعية ويوضح مدى تأثيرها على الطفل، فيشير مثلاً إلى نقطة هامة في تربية الطفل، هي وضع الوالدين الثقافي والنفسي.
ويؤكد أن المسائل التي قد تعاني منها الأهل كسوء الثقافة وسوء التقدير وعدم إختيار الطرق الصحيحة أو مشاكل "أوديبية" لم يتواصلوا سابقاً إلى حلها والتخلص منها في صغرهم كل ذلك يمارس فعلاً سيئاً على الطفل، مما يجعل من "المساعدة المرجوة" طريقاً لتدميره، ومن الأمل الموضوع فيه يأساً أسود منه.
بتلهايم الذي انصرف للدراسة والبحث النظري والميداني في سبيل مساعدة الأسرة في تربية الطفل، يدافع بشدة عن الحكاية الشعبية التي تم إهمالها حالياً وإستبعادها في أحيان كثيرة من تربية الطفل المنزلية، ودفاعه يستمد قوته من كونه توضيحاً لماهية هذه الحكاية ومقدار فعاليتها وجدارتها.
اليوم كما كانت في قديم الزمان، ودحضاً للتخوف من خرافيتها وبعدها عن الواقع، ومطالبة بإعادتها إلى ميدان التربية لما تتحلى به من مميزات، فهي تجسد للطفل المشكلة وتصور له أبعاد الخير والشر، ثم تظهر دائماً في نهايتها إنتصار الخير وهزيمة الشر، تاركة للطفل أن يختار ويقرر ما يتخذه.
في مقارنة بينها وبين القصص الواقعية، يشير بتلهايم إلى فائدة النوعين، لكنه يفضل الحكاية الشعبية لكونها تمتاز بمخاطبة الطفل بشكل رمزي يترك له حرية التحرك والتعلم منها بقدر ما يسمح نموه، وفي نفس الوقت، تبقى العناصر الأخرى في اللاشعور تعمل عملها في الخفاء ولا تظهر إلا عندما يصبح بإستطاعة الطفل هضمها.
فالحكاية الشعبية لا تفرض واقعاً ذا بعد واحد، على الطفل أن يقبل به ويعمل بموجبه، بل تدغدغ خياله وتنشطه وتترك له حرية الفهم والإختيار.
