يعتبر علم الفيزياء أحد فروع العلوم الطبيعية التي تعني بدراسة خصائص العالم الطبيعي الذي نعيش فيه وظواهره، إن الفيزيائيين يجتهدون في محاولة فهم القواعد والقوانين الأساسية التي تحكم سير العالم الطبيعي، بكل ما فيه من كائنات وظواهر، ونظراً لأن نشاطات الفيزيائيين واهتماماتهم تتغير أيضاً مع الزمن، فإن تعرف الفيزياء كعلم أساسي تتغير أيضاً مع الزمن، والدليل على ذلك أن العديد من فروع الفيزياء القائمة الآن لم تكن تخطر على بال أحد منذ جيل أو جيلين.
ولكننا نجد من ناحية أخرى، أن بعض الموضوعات التي تدخل الآن في علم الكيمياء أو علم الهندسة مثلاً، كانت يوماً تعد من موضوعات علم الفيزياء. ذلك لأن الفيزيائيين ينسحبون تدريجياً في بعض الأحيان من مجال ما بمجرد معرفة قوانينه الأساسية تاركين للآخرين القيام بالمزيد من التطوير والتطبيقات العملية له.
