يؤرخ هذا الكتاب لأبرز السلالات الحاكمة في العالم الإسلامي خلال الفترة من (1869-1945م) مركزاً بصفة أساسية على الدولة العثمانية باعتبارها الدولة الرئيسية التي كانت رمزاً للخلافة الإسلامية وتخضع لسلطتها -فعلياً أو إسمياً- مناطق واسعة في البلقان والبلاد العربية وآسيا الوسطى، وتناول الكتاب كذلك تاريخ الأسر الحاكمة في العالم الإسلامي مثل المغرب ومصر وتونس وإيران وأفغانستان وإمارات (خانيات) آسيا الوسطى بالإضافة إلى عائلة الشريف حسين في الحجاز والعراق وسوريا والأردن، مبيناً أبرز الأحداث والسياسات التي ساهمت في ضعف تلك الأسر الحاكمة إلى أن انتهت بسقوط معظمها تحت قوى الاستعمار والسيطرة الغربية، أو حلول أسر حاكمة جديدة محل الأسر القديمة كما حدث للعائلة الحاكمة (القاجارية) في إيران التي حلت محلها الأسرة (البهلوية)، وحلول أسرة آل سعود محل أسرة الشريف حسين في الحجاز وآل الرشيد في نجد.
يعرض الكتاب لبعض مظاهر الترف التي كانت تعيشها بعض الأسر الحاكمة وخاصة في بلاد الدولة ومصر، من بناء القصور الفخمة التي تجمع بين جماليات فن العمارة الإسلامية والأثاث الأوروبي الفاخر التي أنهكت اقتصاديات تلك الممالك، ويعرض كذلك لحفلات ومراسيم وبروتوكولات السلاطين في قصورهم وفي المناسبات العامة والخاصة، وما يصاحبها من مظاهر الإسراف والبذخ كما حدث في حفل افتتاح وتدشين قناة السويس في عهد الخديوي إسماعيل.
والكتاب مزود بصور نادرة لأفراد الأسر الحاكمة وحاشيتهم توثق أسلوب حياتهم ونمط معيشتهم.
