يقوم الإحصاء بصناعة الطرق العلمية إذ يقدم الأدوات اللازمة للوصول إلى قرار في شروط تتحكم فيها المصادفة، أي ضمن ظروف لا يمكن معها التنبؤ بالنتائج من خلال قوانين علمية معروفة. وللطرق الإحصائية تطبيقاتها الواسعة والمفيدة في كل حقل من حقول البحث العلمي تقريباً. ويقدم الإحصاء اليوم حلولاً لكثير من المسائل التي تواجه الإنسان في ميادين العلوم التطبيقية وفي حقول التجارة والإقتصاد والتربية وعلم الإجتماع وغيرها.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يتألف من جزئين، الجزء الأول: يتضمن عشرة فصول تقدم عرضاً مبسطاً وحديثاً للمفاهيم الإبتدائية في الإحتمال والمتحول العشوائي والتوزيعات الإحتمالية. ويخدم هذا العرض كمقدمة لابد منها لموضوع الإستقراء الأحصائي. والعديد من الأمثلة المحلولة والتمارين موجه بحيث تساعد القارئ على إستيعاب الأفكار الأساسية في التقدير النقطي والتقدير المجالي وإختبار الفرضيات. ويعرض فصل الإستقراء عينات كبيرة الحجم وعينات صغيرة الحجم لإختبار فرضيات حول متوسط مجتمع وتشتت مجتمع ولمقارنة متوسطين ومقارنة تشتتين. والفصلان الأخيران يناقشان موضوع التراجم الخطي بمتجول واحد ثم بعدة متحولات.
أما الجزء الثاني فإستكمل المواضيع الأساسية في طرق الإحصاء، فناقش في الفصل الحادي عشر وحتى الفصل الرابع عشر، المفهوم العام لتحليل التشتت وتحليل تمام التشتت، ويعرض بالتفصيل التصاميم الرئيسية الثلاثة في الإحصاء وهي التصميم التام العشوائية، وتصميم الزمرة التامة العشوائية، وتصميم المربع اللاتيني، بالإضافة إلى طرق تحليل التجارب العاملية، أما الفصلان الأخيران، وهما الفصل الخامس عشر والفصل السادس عشر، فيعالجان أهم إختبارات الإحصاء غير الوسيطي، ويتضمن الملحق عدداً من أهم الجداول الإحصائية مما يحتاجه القارئ.
