محمد ماهر حمادة ، مؤرخ ومحقق ووثائقي من سوريا ، عمل أستاذا للتاريخ والحضارة العربية الإسلامية في عدة جامعات عربية وأجنبية ، آخرها جامعة الإمام محمد بن سعود الإسلامية ،حاصل على الدكتوراه في "علم المكتبات" من جامعة ميشيغان في الولايات المتحدة.

يتألف هذا الكتاب من قسمين أساسيين متكافئين:
الأول: دراسة منهجية في دراسة انتقال التراث العربي المخطوط إلى ديار الغرب وكيف استفاد الغرب منه وكيف نقل هذا التراث إلى لغات الغرب وأشهر النقلة، والطرق والمعابر التي انتقل عبرها. وما هي نظرة القوم إلى العملية، وما هي الصعوبات التي واجهتهم، وما هي اهتماماتهم، كذلك بحث في استفادة الغرب من معطيات الشرق وكيف أثرت هذه المعطيات في نهضة الغرب وما هي الوسائل التي اتخذها الغرب لحسن استفادته من هذه المعطيات. كذلك ذكر الموضوعات التي اهتم بها الغرب أكثر من غيرها وكيف كان التركيز عليها.
وأوضح التحالف الذي تم بين الكنيسة والاستشراق من أقدم العصور لتحقيق هذه الأهداف، وإلى أي مدى نجح القوم في تحقيق أهدافهم.
هذا في المرحلة الأولى من عملية تمثل المعطيات الحضارية للإسلام والعرب.
أما في المرحلة الثانية وهي مرحلة تفوق الغرب في جميع المجالات وشعوره بتفوقه، فقد بدأت الغارة على العالم الإسلامي وتحالف من أجل هذه الغاية الاستعمار والاستشراق والتبشير وأدى الأمر إلى وقوع القسم الأعظم من العالم الإسلامي بين براثن الاستعمار. وأوضح اهتمام القوم بتراثنا وكيف جمعوه من جميع بقاع دنيا العروبة والإسلام وبمختلف الوسائل وكيف حفظوه وحققوه ونشروه وترجموا كثيراً من عيونه وألفوا حولنا وحول حضارتنا الكثير والكثير جداً.
وأوضح بشكل خاص دور الجامعات في هذا المضمار وما فعلته من أجل هذه الغاية.
أما القسم الثاني فهو لائحة بيبليوغرافية حسب الموضوعات بأسماء أشهر الكتب التراثية العربية التي حققها غربيون أو حررها أوربيون أو نقلوها إلة لغتهم أو طبعت في بلدان أوربا وأمريكا، وهي لائحة طويلة عريضة تحوي جميع فروع المعرفة الإنسانية.
