ربما لم يسمع الكثيرون بهذه الإمارة من قبل وربما سمع عنها القليلون ممن عاشوا فترة قيامها وازدهارها بين عامي 1850 و1942م. إلا أن هذه الإمارة التي نشأت مع هجرة الأمير عبد الله آل خميس من نجد إلى لواء المنتفج في العراق كان يطلق عليها قبل ذلك (العسرة) وسبب تلك التسمية راجعة إلى صعوبة السكن والعيش فيها مقارنة بالمدن الأخرى المجاورة لها. فهي بعيدة عن مجرى نهر الفرات، كما أن قسماً كبيراً من أراضيها ليس صالحاً للزراعة.
ويؤرجح المؤرخون أنها كانت مستوطنة بشرية قديمة في إحدى الفترات التاريخية. وفي سنة 1858 بينت الإمارة بدعن من الحكومة العثمانية وبمساعدة آل السعدون الذين كانوا يقطنون في لواء المنتفج. وقد باشر عبد الله بن خميس بناءها بمساعدة من معه من النجديين وأقام بها قصر الإمارة الذي انتشرت حوله البيوت والأسواق. ولقد ساعدت بعض الظروف على أن تزدهر هذه الإمارة حتى استقطبت عدداً من الهجرات من نجد وخاصة من منطقة القصيم.
أما عن موقعها بالضبط فهي تقع بين سوق الشيوخ والهور الكبير أي في جنوب سوق الشيوخ والفرات وأبو غار وشمال غرب بلدة الزبير، أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو أحد أحفاد الأمير عبد الله آل خميس سعى جاهداً أن يلم بأخبار الخميسية وتاريخها فاجتمع له كم كبير من الوثائق والمعلومات التي تكشف عن مكانة الخميسية وما كان لها ولأهلها من دور في الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية طوال سنوات ازدهارها.
