يمكن تعريف الحاسب الآلي بأنه جهاز يعمل وفقاًُ لمجموعة من البرامج المخزنة لاستقبال ومعالجة البيانات بطريقة أوتوماتيكية لكي تعطي معلومات مفيدة نتيجة لتلك المعالجة. وفي هذا الإطار يأتي كتاب "تقنية الحاسب الآلي" والذي يبحث في أساسيات وبرمجيات واتصالات وشبكات الحاسب الآلي. هذا وأن ما يعطي هذا الكتاب خصوصيته هو عرضه المفاهيم الأساسية بأسلوب سلس وبسيط دون لجوء المؤلف إلى التعقيدات التي تسببها الكتابة بلغة المصطلحات، وكتابة كل مصطلح علمي باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية حتى ترسخ هذه المصطلحات في ذهن القارئ.
كما أن المؤلف عمد إلى تضمين بعض التقنيات والمفاهيم الأساسية التي قلما توجد في الكتب الأخرى، مثل تقنية الألياف الضوئية، واستخدام أشعة الليزر ممثلة في طابعات الليزر، مع التوسع في شرح مفهوم الحاسبات الآلية والشبكات المحلية والدولية مثل شبكة إنترنت لما لها من أهمية كبرى في الوقت الحاضر.
