يقول "نجيب البغيني" في مقدمة كتابه هذا أن ما دفعه إلى وضع موسوعته هذه، هو اعتقاده بن ما كتب حتى الآن من بحوث ودراسات عن بعض الشعراء النابغين لا يفي بالغرض، ولا يعطيهم حقهم من التعريف بهم، وبما قدموه من قصائد رائعة، وما بذلوه من جهد للنهوض بالحركة الشعرية المعاصرة، فكان لهم فضل كبير في أن الألسن بها، والأقلام كتبت عنها وسارت خطى واسعة في مدارج تقدمها وازدهارها، بعض هذه النخبة التي أخذها اتفاقاً بغير تقصد، هم شعراء ما انصفوا في حياتهم، فشال في الميزان من هم دونهم، وعليهم هم انطوت حنايا النسيان.
ولهذا عمد إلى وضع موسوعته هذه التي قصد منها أن تكون مرجعاً للباحثين والمؤرخين وطلاب الجامعات وطلبة الدراسات العليا، يرجعون إليه كلما احتاجوا إلى معلومات عن هؤلاء الشعراء أو عن مؤلفاتهم المطبوعة والمخطوطة، أو حتى عن معلومات وأبيات مما جاء في دواوينهم الشعرية، وهؤلاء الشعراء هم: أحمد شوقي، حافظ إبراهيم، محمد مهدي الجواهري، بدر شاعر السياب، عبد الوهاب البياتي، نزار قباني، محمود سامي البارودي، رشيد سليم الخوري، بشارة الخوري (الأخطل الصغير)، أحمد الصافي النجفي، إبراهيم طوقان، مصطفى وهبي التل، محمد سليمان الأحمد، أبو القاسم الشابي، فؤاد الخطيب، الياس عبد الله طعمة، حسن عبد الله القرشي، حليم دموس، محمد محمود الزبيري، التجاني يوسف بشير، محمد العيد آل خليفة، إبراهيم المنذر.
