يمثل هذا الكتاب دليلاً بأسماء رواة كتب الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة الستة حيث يتدرج اسم الراوي وأبيه وجده ومنتهى أشهر نسبته ونسبه، وكنيته ولقبه، ثم صفته أي الصفة التي اختص بها والتعريف بعصر كل راوٍ منهم، وباعتبار ما تم ذكره، انحصر كلام المؤلف في هذا المصنف على أحوالهم في اثني عشر مرتبة، وحصر طبقاتهم في اثني عشر طبقة. فأما المراتب: فأولها الصحابة. وثانيها: من أكد مدحه، إما بفعل: كأوثق الناس، أو بتكرير الصفة لفظاً: كثقة ثقة، أو معنى كثقة حافظ.
ثالث هذه المراتب أفردت لمن اختص بصفة، كثقة، أو متقن.. ورابعها: من قصر عن الدرجة الثالثة قليلاً إليه الإشارة: بصدوق أو لا بأس به، وخامساً: من قصر الرابعة قليلاً، وإليه الإشارة بصدوق سيئ الحفظ وصدوق بهم.. وسادسها: من ليس له من الحديث إلا القليل، ولم يثبت فيه ما يترك حديثه من أجله، وإليه الإشارة بلفظ مقبول... سابعها: من روى عنه أكثر من واحد ولم يوثق، ثامنها: من لم يوجد فيه توثيق لمعتبر، ووجد فيه إطلاق الضعيف، ولو لم يفسر.
تاسعها: من لم يرو عنه غير واحد، ولم يوثق، عاشرها، من لم يوثق البتة وضعف مع ذلك بقادح، وإليه الإشارة، بمتروك، أو متروك الحديث، أما المرتبة العاشرة فكانت لكل من لمي يوثق البتة، وضعف مع ذلك بقادح، وإليه الإشارة بمتروك، الحادي عشر: من اتهم بالكذب، الثانية عشر: من أطلق عليه اسم الكذب والوضع.
وأما الطبقات: فالأولى: الصحابة، على اختلاف مراتبهم، وتمييز من ليس له منهم إلا مجرد الرؤية من غيره. الثانية: طبقة كبار التابعين كابن المسيب، الثالثة: الطبقة الوسطى من التابعين، الرابعة: طبقة تليها، جل روايتهم عن كبار التابعين، كالزهري. الخامسة: الطبقة الصغرى منهم، الذين رأوا الواحد الاثنين، ولم يثبت لبعضهم السماع من الصحابة كالأعمش. السادسة طبقة عاصروا الخامسة، لكن لم يثبت لهم لقاء أحد من الصحابة، كابن جريح، السابعة: كبار أتباع التابعين، كمالك. الثامنة: الطبقة الوسطى منهم، كابن يميينة... التاسعة: الطبقة الصغرى من أتباع التابعين: كيزيد بن هارون، العاشرة: كبار الآخذين عن تبع الأتباع، ممن لم يلق التابعين، كأحمد بن حنبل، الحادية عشرة: الطبقة الوسطى عن ذلك، كالذهلي. الطبقة الثانية عشرة: صغار الآخذين عن تبع الأتباع كالترمذي.
