ثربانتس يجمع بين فنّي عصر النهضة وعصر الباروك. فهو بتكوينه الثقافي والفكري ينتمي إلى عصر النهضة. فالمثالية والأفلاطونية، والإيمان بالطبيعة، سمات تصبغ جانباً هاماً من أدبه. لكن ظروف حياته والأحداث التاريخية في عصره، غطت مع مرور الزمن على «رموز النهضة»، وقادته إلى فكرة خيبة الأمل الباروكية . فموقف ثربانتس النقدي والريبي ووعيه «بالقيمة المزدوجة للأشياء يمثل خطوة متقدمة نحو الباروكية». ومع ذلك، لا الشك ولا خيبة الأمل دفعت به إلى التشاؤم «فتجربته المؤلمة لم تولد عنده مواقف سلبية». فظلت فكاهته سليمة خالية من المرارة؛ وهي بدلاً من أن تهدم، «ترفع وتُعلي من شأن كل ما تلمسه لأنها تتجذر في إحساس من الفهم الصحيح». أسلوبه ولغته يقفان أيضاً بين عصري النهضة والبارّوك. فهو بميله إلى ما هو سهل مطبوع، وبعيد عن التكلف والتعقيد، يمتثل لقواعد عصر النهضة، لكنه في بعض السمات كالتضاد المستخدم في الدون كيخوته بكثرة، «ينبئ بما ستكون عليه أساليب عصر الباروك». كتب ثربانتس الشعر والقصة والرواية والمسرحية لكنه نبغ في الرواية والقصة ومسرح الإنترميس. هاتان القصتان / «زواج بالخديعة» و«حديث كلبين» / تشكلان عملاً واحداً، وهما مأخوذتان من مجموعة (القصص المثالية) التي تبلغ خمس عشرة قصة. أثبتنا مقدمة ثربانتس للمجموعة كلها، ثم مقدمة الناقد آ. بلبوينا الخاصة بهاتين القصتين المذكورتين.
