يقدم هذا الكتاب دراسة علمية موثقة في الاتجاهات السياسية في لبنان بين عام 1920 و1982م مع تبيان موقف المسلمين من الكيان اللبناني والمواقف الدولي منه. وهكذا يبحث الفصل الأولفي خليفية الصراع على الساحة اللبنانية منذ الفتح الإسلامي حتى قبيل حرب 1975.. والعمل ليس تاريخياً وإنما هو اختيار للأحداث التي تعطي الصورة المطلوبة.
ثم عن إنساء لبنان الكبير مروراً بدستور 1927 وميثاق 1943.. حتى ثورة 1958.
أما الفصل الثاني فيقدم عرضاً للقضايا التي تمحور حولها الصراع داخلياً وخارجياً كالمشاركة والجنسية والمواقف في أعقاب حرب 1967 العربية-الإسرائيلية. ومن ثم تبيان إرهاصات حرب 1975.
ويطرح الفصل الثالث: أسباب الحرب، منذ بداية الشرارة بمقتل نائب صيدا معروف سعد في شباط 1975، مروراً بحادثة 13 نيسان 1975 واستقالة حكومة رشيد الصلح، ثم أعمال هيئة الحوار في صيف 1975.
ويقدم الفصل الرابع: للوثيقة الدستورية في شباط 1976 والمواقف منها، وانفجار المؤسسة العسكرية 1976، مع دراسة للوضع الداخلي العسكري والسياسي والمواقف المحلية والعربية.
ويتناول الفصل الخامس: تحول وجهة الصراع 1976. انتقال رئاسة الجمهورية من الرئيس سليمان فرنجية إلى الرئيس الياس سركيس. مؤتمر الرياض وتوقف "حرب السنتين".
أما الفصل السادس فيعرض: الصيع المطروحة للبنان الجديد مع موقف كل الفرقاء. ولمؤتمر بيت الدين وزيارة الموفد البابوي الكاردينال برتولي. ولظهور نغمة التوطين، ولمحاولة الدولة إقامة وفاق عام 1980، وإعلان دولة سعد حداد في الشريط الحدودي، وحالة الضياع عند المسلمين عام 1980.
ويعالج الفصل السابع: الاجتياح الإسرائيلي 1982، التمهيد الإسرائيلي للإجتياح أبرز لبنان كأنه بؤرة إرهاب أمام العالم. الاجتياح حتى بيروت.
