قيس بن الملوح والملقب بالمجنون، شاعر أموي بارز، من أشعر أهل زمانه، أشتهر بحب ابنة عمه ليلى العامرية منذ صغره وتقدم لطلب يدها من أبيها بعد أن افتضح أمرها من شعره فيها ولأمره، فأبت على نفس أبيها الغيرة، فخشى من سوء السمعة في العشيرة، فكاد له وزوجها برجل من ثقيف، فهام على وجهه في البراري متوحشاً منعزلاً، يشكو من لوثة ألمت بعقله، وألم ألم في غياهب نفسه من نار عشق استهرت في أحشائه، فمات كمدا في إحدى شعاب الفيافي.
وسواء كان قيس بن الملوح مجنوناً أم عاقلاً، فقد ترك وراءه قصة عشق مؤلمة تناقلتها الأجيال العربية عبر قرون عديدة مضت وخلدها الرواة والكتاب في تراثنا الأدبي، وقد واجهت شخصية ابن الملوح الإنكار من قبل عدداً من الأدباء العرب وأيضاً الإثبات من العديدين، وفي النهاية أيضاً هي كنز أدبي من نوعه، يصف أنواعاً وضروباً من المشاعر الإنسانية والحياة البدوية والقيم الاجتماعية السائدة في البادية العربية النجدية في العصر الأموي، بالإضافة إلى القيم اللغوية والأدبية التي تمتع بها ذالك العصر وما أتحفنا به من جميل اللغة وطريف الأخبار.
