يعتبر طعمة فرمان أحد رواد الرواية العراقية الفنية، إن لم نقل رائدها الأول، وعلى الرغم من ذلك، وعلى الرغم من أهمية أعمال فرمان ومكانتها الكبيرة في الأدب والنقد الأدبي، إلا أن عالمه الإبداعي ونشاطه الأدبي لم يدرس في أطروحة كاملة علماً أن نتاجاته لعبت دوراً كبيراً في تعميق وعي الناس التراثي والقومي والوطني في الصراع ضد مختلف أشكال التخلف.
وتعدّ دراسة زهير شليبة التي يضمّها هذا الكتاب أول أطروحة أكاديمية تتناول سيرة حياة الكاتب ودوره في الحياة الأدبية والنقدية ونتاجاته القصصية المبكرة ومجموعاته الأخرى وعالمه الروائي. وقد استخدم الباحث أحاديث الكاتب الشخصية إلى صرح طعمة فرمان بها له في العديد من اللقاءات الشخصية التي كانت تجمعه وإياه. معتمداً في إعداد الأطروحة على المنهج العلمي الموضوعي الذي يهتم بدراسة الحقائق التاريخية ودور الأدب في الحياة الاجتماعية. مستخدماً لذلك مجموعة كبيرة من المصادر المراجع والمواد التي أعانته في دراسة أصل النوع-الروائي في الأدب العراقي ومتابعة تكونه، لكي يمكن له فيما بعد من تحديد مكانة غائب طعمة فرمان في هذه العملية، وبيان إنجازه الجديد في الرواية العراقية، التي حصلت بفضله على سمات ميّزتها عن الأنواع النثرية الأخرى. ومن الملاحظ أن الباحث قام بدراسة أعمال طعمة ضمن سياق حركة النثر العراقي المعاصر وتطوره مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار القوانين العامة لتطور النوع الروائي. لقد قدم الباحث، في حقيقة الأمر، تحليلاً لكل أعمال غائب طعمة فرمان الغنية، إضافة إلى مقالاته الصحفية والنقدية التي طرح فيها أفكاره عن الأدب ووظيفة الكاتب في المجتمع العرب. على أنه من المفيد القول بأن معرفة المؤلف الشخصية بغائب طعمة فرمان أعانته في تدقيق بعض المسائل المتعلقة بسيرة حياته وتنقلاته وإبداعه. ولهذا فإن كتاب زهير شليبة يقدم تصوراً كاملاً عن شخصية غائب طعمة فرمان وعالمه الغني.
