أمضى الأندلسيون نحو ثمانية قرون بين عدويَن: عدو أمامهم يتمثل بأوروبا، وعدو من خلفهم يتمثل بالبحر، وهما أوَل عدويَن واجها طارق بن زياد وهو يعبر إلى الأندلس وأمام هذا الانقطاع وراء البحار والأخطار المتتابعة التي كانت تهدَد الوجود الإسلامي في الأندلس ظلَت الروح الأندلسية تتوق إلى الشرق الإسلامي وإلى مهد الإسلام في مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة كي تستمد من هناك روح العبر والصمود، وكان حلم أيَ أندلسي، عالماً كان أو غير عالم، لا يتعدَى أداء الرحلة إلى الشرق، وزيارة قبر الرسول الكريم عليه صلوات الله وسلامه، وأداء فريضة الحجَ، ولقاء العلماء في حواضر العالم الإسلاميَ كلَه والاقتباس من حلمهم ومعارفهم، والتطواف بمنازل الأجداد... فكان ذلك كلَه أهم عامل من عوامل كثرة الرحلات الأندلسية حتى بلغ تعدادها المئات من خلال ما نقلته المصادر الأندلسية، وكان بعض الرحَالة يكتفي بالزيارة وأخذ العلم، وكان بعضهم يضيف إلى ذلك تدوين ما شاهده وما أخذه من أقطاب العلم في المشرق والمغرب. وقد خلَف الأندلسيون لذلك عشرات كتب الرحلات، مثل رحلة ابن جبير ورحلة ابن بطوطة ورحلة ابن رشيد ورحلة القلصادي وغيرها كثير.
ولهذا تصدَت الباحثة نوال الشوابكة لاستقصاء هذه الرحلات ودراستها لما تحمله هذه الرحلات من قيمة علمية ومعرفيَة جمَة، إذ تمثل هذه الرحلات جزءاً مهماً من التاريخ الاجتماعي للشعوب العربية والإسلامية وغيرها خلال مراحل تاريخية مختلفة، كما أنها تمثل وسيلة من وسائل التواصل الثقافي والفكري والتبادل العلمي المعرفي بين الشعوب، وقد أدَى الرحَالة دور السفراء والممثلين لبلدانهم ومجتمعاتهم في البلدان التي زاروها أو نزاورها. كما أنَ هذه الرحلات تعكس مجالات اهتمام الأندلسيين وقراءاتهم الحضارية لما كانت تقع عليه عيونهم خلال هذه الرحلات.
