تحمل القراءة في هذا الكتاب طابعاً أكاديمياً مدرسياً، وتتغيى تشكيل أرضية ينطلق منها التلميذ الطالب والأستاذ في تعاملهما مع المؤلفات السردية والمسرحية.
لذلك فهي تتوخى التعريف بخصائص هذين الجنسين الأدبيين من خلال تحليل رواية الساحة الشرقية لعبد القادر الشاوي، ومسرحية أهل الكهف لتوفيق الحكيم والسيرة الذاتية (رجوع إلى الطفولة) للكاتبة المغربية ليلى أبو زيد من جهة، وتزويد المتعاملين مع هذه الأجناس الأدبية بجهاز مفاهيمي يساعدهم على إقتحام عوالم هذه الأجناس ومن خلالها أي عمل سردي أو مسرحي من جهة أخرى.
ومن أجل ذلك فإن هذه المحاولة لم تلتزم بأي منهج نقدي محدد، وبل اعتمدت منهجاً تكاملياً مرناً يمتح من مناهج متعددة، فرضة طبيعة المتلقي وخصوصية الأعمال المدروسة، بالإضافة إلى تسعى هذه القراءة إلى البساطة والإبتعاد عن التنظير الأكاديمي، ذلك أن معظم الكتب - برأي المؤلف - التي حاولت تحليل الخطاب الروائي والخطاب السردي عامة تركت النصوص جانباً وأوغلت في التنظير وأغرقت في التعاريف وهي في ذلك عملت على قتل النص وتهميش خصائصه النوعية، في وقت كل ما يحتاجه النشء هو الجانب العلمي التطبيقي والتمرين على التحليل.
