يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة تحليلية في سلوك وبناهة الحيوانات وعلاقتها بالإنسان وبالطبيعة على مر التاريخ.
في البدء يستند عبد اللطيف شرارة شارح الكتاب إلى ذكر القرآن الكريم لعالم الحيوان ويؤكد على ذلك بأن الله تعالى جعل في كتابه العزيز سوراً للنحل، والنمل، والعنكبوت، والأنعام كلها... بعد ذلك يدرس صلة الحيوان بالأقدمين الذين اتخذوا من بعض الحيوانات أصناماً ورموزاً، وحمَلوها كثيراً من الشمائل، والفضائل ، والرذائل، وأدخلوها في اساطيرهم. بعد ذلك يتطرق إلى الأصل في حكايات "كلية ودمنة" وأماثيل إيزويوس الأغريقي، ولافونتين الفرنسي من بعد وهو أول من اشتهر بما وضع من أماثيل على لسان الحيوانات استقى معظمها من إيزويوس.
وحين ارتقى الفكر بعض الشيء، وتخلص من الأوهام والخرافات، واتجه رويداً رويداً نحو العلم، ظهر كتاب أرسطو عن الحيوان. بعد ذلك انغمست الأذهان في شؤون الغيب وظلت الخرافات والأساطير تتحكم بالناس إلى أن ظهر الإسلام، فأعاد للعقل اعتباره في حياة الفرد والجماعة على السواء. يقظة العقل هذه أدت كما يشير الشارح إلى إعادة النظر في تلك العلاقة بين الإنسان والحيوان من زاوية أكثر انفتاحاً، وأشد التصاقاً بالواقع، والتي يعرض هذا الكتاب كثيراً منها...
يغطي الكتاب بفصوله العشرة جميع أنواع الحيوانات وسلوكاتها وبناهتها ومنها: النمل والعنكبوت والنحل الطحان والبراغيت البق والزحافات والضفادع والحيات والسلاحف والسمندل والطيور وذوات الثداء وذوات الأكياس وأكلة اللحوم والقرود وغيرها.
