كتاب "درء القول القبيح بالتحسين والتقبيح"، الذي صنّفه نجم الدين الصوفي في سنة708/1308-1309 هو، في موضوعه العام ومضمونه، من أهم ما كتبه على الإطلاق، حيث أفرده لموضوع التحسين والتقبيح، فبحث في أصل هذه المسألة وفروعها، في أصول الدين وأصول الفقه وفروعه، والظاهر أنه لم يسبق أن ضُمِّن كتابٌ واحداً كل هذا ومثل هذا التنويع في المواضيع؛ فيكون كتاب الطوفي ممثلاً فريداً وجامعاً لأقوال جمهور أهل السنة في المبحث، ومرجعاً لمعظم فروعه. ومما يعدّ لهذا الكتاب أيضاً ندرة الفصول المفردة في كتب الفقه في تعلّق مسألة التحسين والتقبيح بالفروع الفقهية، وهو موضوع الفصل الرابع من الكتاب.
كذلك، يُضَمِّن الطوفي كتابه جزءين طويلين في مسألة القدر، هما أيضاً ذوا أهمية. ففي الأول، يرد على كلام للمعتزلة في معارضة أهل السنة في مسألة القدر وفي إثبات الاختيار المستقلّ للإنسان، خصوصاً كلام أبي الحسين البصري المعتزلي. ثم يورد رسالة في القدر منسوبة إلى الحسن البصري، أوردها القاضي عبد الجبار المعتزلي كتاب "طبقات المعتزلة"، وهي موافقة لأصول المعتزلة. ويردّ الطوفي عليها رداً طويلاً مفصلاً. والظاهر أنه الأول من أهل السنة الذي اهتم بهذه الرسالة وردّ عليها مثل هذا الرد؛ والغالب أنه الوحيد. يقول: "أعرض الناس، فيما علمنا، عن معارضتها لأمر ما، مع أن الرسالة هائلة في بابها، والجواب عنها متعين؛ إذ قد تضمنت كل حجج القدرية في المسألة، أو جلبها".
ثم يفرد الجزء الأخير من الكتاب في إيراد الأدلة النقلية في إثبات القدر. فيستقرئ أولاً جميع الآيات القرآنية في ذلك، على ترتيب السور، ويفسرها بما يلائم الموضوع. فيكون هذا القسم من الكتاب تفسيراً موضوعياً نادراً في بابه. ويردّ، بعد ذلك، على استدلالات المعتزلة من آي القرآن. ثم يورد بعض الأحاديث في إثبات القدر، بعضها بأسانيد متصلة.
