يقدم الروائي (وعياً نقدياً للتاريخ) في رواياته ومن جهات عدة أهمها: الدور التفسيري للتاريخ وإدراك أسباب ما وقع ماضياً؛ إذا اضطلعت رواياته بدور تفسيري للعالم المتخيل لإكمال ما سكت عنه التاريخ، مرة عن طريق الموازنة المفسرة لأحداثه وقضاياه، وأخرى بالتفسير المباشر والتحليل للأسباب.
والجهة الثانية هي وعي التاريخ من آثاره، وذلك بإستيعاب الروائي المؤثرات التاريخية في حدوث بعض الحوادث، بواسطة قراءة النتائج والآثار وتحليلها؛ ويركز الروائي في هذه الجهة على الأثر والمؤثر، فالروائي يحلل آثار التاريخ أو المرحلة التاريخية أو الأحداث والقضايا التاريخية.
والجهة الثالثة هي الوعي بثقافة المجتمع التاريخي الذي تمثله الشخصيات الروائية، بواسطتها يعرض الروائي وعياً إنتقادياً للتاريخ ولقضاياه الإجتماعية: المحضة، والمتأثرة بالسياسة، المتأنية من تأثير سياسي، وفي الوقت نفسه يبعث الروح بالعصر / التاريخ من جديد.
والجهة الرابعة للوعي التاريخي هي وعي الكاتب لقضايا العصر التاريخية، أي قضايا عصره، لا سيما أن إشتغالها كان في الروايات التي زمنها التاريخي الخارجي هو العصر الذي يعيش فيه الروائي، فهو يستوعب قضايا العصر بوعي تاريخي لظروف المرحلة التاريخية، ملقياً على عاتقه مهمة تحليل المؤثر في إدارة الأحداث التاريخية في الرواية، وفحص القوى التاريخية المعاصرة ومزجها.
ولا بد من الإنتباه إلى أن عنصر التحليل هو الصفة المميزة في النقاط المذكورة آنفاً وهذا ما يسوق العمل بإتجاه الوعي النقدي للتاريخ.
