ماري آن إيفانس - Mary Ann (Marian) Evans هي روائية أنجليزية ولدت في (22 نوفمبر1819) وتوفيت في (22 ديسمبر 1880) وهي أكثر شهرة ً باسمها القلمي جورج إليوت رواياتها التي تحصل معظم أحداثها في إنجلترا معروفة بواقعيتها والبعد النفسي فيها.
وقد اختارت اسماً قلمياً ذكورياً لأنه بحسب رأيها أرادت ان تكون واثقة من أن تأخذ أعمالها محمل الجد وكي لا يعتربها أحد كاتبة رومنسية لمجرد أنها امرأة، رغم أن العديد من النساء كُن مؤلفات في ذلك الوقت في أوروبا ويُعتقد أيضاً انها غيرت اسمها لتبتعد عن عالم الشهرة كي لا يتطرق أحد إلى علاقتها مع الفيلسوف (جورج هنري لويس) الذي كان متزوجاً في ذلك الوقت.

هي قصة عالمية. إنسانية الطابع للكاتبة البريطانية الشهيرة جورج إليوت وتعرف هذه القصة عالمياً باسم (سيلارس مارنر). تعالج موضوع عامل فقير أخلص لربه ولعمله طيلة حياته, ورغم المصاعب التي يتعرض لها في الحياة والمشقات التي عاناها منذ ريعان الشباب, استطاع أن يشق دربه في الحياة وأن يحيا سعيداً بفضل وجود طفلة أرسلها الله إليه كنعمة ربانية, في وقت الضيق والوحشة والكآبة. اسلوب شاعري واقعي مغلف بصور ريفية ناطقة عن قدسية الطبيعة. وطهارة الإنسان الذي يعيش بين أحضانها. وتصر جورج إليوت في قصة النساج الطيب على إظهار الفكرة التالية: لا تكتمل سعادة الإنسان إلا بالغيرية أي بمشاركة الآخرين في الأفراح والأتراح.
