مجال هذا الكتاب مدرسة هامة من مدارس الفلسفة المعاصرة، وهي تلك المعروفة باسم "الوضعية المنطقية"، التي ظهرت في الربع الثاني من القرن العشرين في فيينا، عندما أعلن مجموعة من العلماء والفلاسفة ذوي التوجه العلمي بيانهم التأسيسي: "الفهم العلمي للعالم: حلقة فيينا".
لقد كان لذلك البيان صداه الإيجابي في أوساط العلماء وبعض الفلاسفة، بسبب ما تضمّنه من عناوين لافتة مثل: "إستبعاد الميتافيزيقا"، و"فلسفة علمية"، و"علم موحد"، بحيث بدا الأمر وكاننا بصدد وضع حدّ نهائي للصراع "اللامجدي" بين المذاهب الفلسفية.
وقد اقترنت الوضعية المنطقية في العربية باسم رائدها "زكي نجيب محمود"، الذي زوج لها، إلا أنه خلط بين طروحات الوضعية المنطقية وطرحات فلاسفة التحليل، وتوسّع فيما يعنيه المنطق الوضعي ليشمل سائر الفلاسفة المهتمين بدراسة منطق البحث العلمي، بغض النظر عن الإختلافات الجلية فيما بينهم، والتي لا تشك بمعرفة الكاتب بها.
ولكن هذه الروية هي رؤية خاصة بــ"زكي نجيب محمود"، قد يكون المقصود منها الترويج لكل فلسفة علمية تعارض الميتافيزيقيا، الأمر الذي يلغي بعض النقد الذي نوجهه إليه، ولكنه لا تعبر في النهاية عن وجهة نظر الوضعيين المنطقيين.
لذا، ربما أنَّ هدفنا ينحصر في عرض الوضعية المنطقية، فلقد اخترنا أن نعرض لهذه الفلسفة من زاوية محددة: محاولتها إستبعاد الميتافيزيقا من دائرة القول الفلسفي وبناء فلسفة علمية وعلم موحد، وبالتالي، مصير هذه المحاولة بعد أن اعترضتها جملة من الصعوبات الداخلية والإنتقادات الخارجية.
