بطل هذه الرواية يعيش في إحدى مدن المغرب الصالحية الكبرى، بشقته في عمارة (دار السعادة) وهي تطل على الساحة العظمى ومنها على البحر، والميناء. وتبدأ معاناته يوم طرد من وظيفته وهو لم يزل شاباً. إن هذه الرواية تحفل بالرموز والإشارات التي يوظفها الإخفاء والتظاهر، أي على قدر عال جداً من التنكر وصاحبتها أو صاحبها قد يكون من عليه القوم كما قد يكون من أوسع فئات الشعب. إنه يلبس ليكون شخصاً آخر غير ذاته، إما لأنه يرفض هذه الذات وإما لأنه لا يعرفها ونموذجها العادي هو ذلك الذي لا يستطيع أن يتعرف على نفسه في المرآة أو المرأة.
والمرأة هنا هي بالمعنى الرمزي أو بالمعنى الفعلي ومثالها الشائع البسيط المرأة التي لم ترقط وجهها، خارج الماكياج، أو تلك التي شوهت وجهها من كثرة الأصباغ.
