ينظر فرويد إلى الحلم على أنه تحقيق لرغبة يكتبها النائم أو يخضعها للرقابة في لا وعيه والتي تتحرر بشكل مخفي في أحلامه. وأكثر هذه الرغبات، ما يتعارض مع الأعراف والتقاليد والعادات وقد يستنكر من يمارس تفسير الأحلام في هذه الأيام أسلوب فرويد أو يعتبرها جامدة، إلا أن أحداً لا يمكنه أن ينكر فضل فرويد وإن يعترف بجدية توجهه نحو الموضوع، وعملية بعض أساليبه.
وفي هذا الكتاب (عوالم الحلم) يلفت المؤلف قارءه إلى جانب مهم في الشخصية الإنسانية أحاط به الإبهام وخلفته السرية التامة وهو عالم الأحلام محاولاً الإجابة عن أسئلة تتعلق بالطريق التي تحدث بها الأحلام، مفسراً معناها، وكاشفاً عن مدى علاقتها بالمستقبل. يعرض المؤلف في أسلوب سلس للصور التي تحدث والعقل، والنظريات القديمة حول الأحلام، كما يضرب الأمثلة عن الكثير من الأحلام التي غيرت العالم والتقدم المفاجئ والحديث في أبحاث الأحلام وتفسير الأحلام اليوم.
