طوال سنوات من الممارسة السيكولوجية، تعلمت، من خلال رسائل نساء من جميع الأعمال، أن السعادة المستقرة والوجود العميق هما وطنا المرأة.
ونحن نعيش عصراً حلت فيه سيكولوجيا انتحارية محل الاستقرار الداخلي، وتخلت الماهية عن مكانها إلى جميع المظاهر السطحية.
ولهذا السبب، فإن ظمأ النساء الحاليات الى الاطمئنان ثانية ظمأ واسع الأرجاء.
وتبحث النساء، سواء في الثامنة عشرة من عمرهن أو في الرابعة والعشرين وسواء يعملن في الخارج أم لا، عن جواب لواقعة أنهن كن مخدوعات في جميع العصور. ولا زلن، في أيامنا هذه، مسحوقات أكثر من أي وقت مضى. وهن يحسسن بذلك، على الرغم من الهدايا المذهبة التي تقدم إليهن.
لقد شرعن، إذ يترجحن من اليسار الى اليمين، وإذ يشعرهن الناس من كل مكان بالإثم، في حركة نواسية خطيرة. فعمّ يبحثن؟ إنهن يبحثن عن الخروج من اللا أمن الوجداني. ولكن من يخرجهن منه، أولئك الذين سيقولون لهن لماذا ينبذن، ويهملن، ويقهرن، ويستبعدن، في أيامنا هذه كما بالأمس.
ويخدعهن الرجل، على غير علم منه لأنه يعاني حصراً أبدياً تدفع المرأة تكاليفه. ولكن النساء يخدعن أنفسهن أيضاً، إذ يجعلن من أنفسهن ضالعات لا إراديات في هذا الحصر المذكر، وإذ يحولن استطاعة الأنوثة غالباً الى سحر هزيل، خال من الإبداعية.
فعلى النساء أن يعلمن أنهن أقل مما يعتقدن بكثير حرماناً من الميزات. بل إنهن لسن، بصورة أساسية، محرومات على الإطلاق. وعليهن كذلك أن يدركن أن غالبية الانتفاضات الراهنة تتكشف أنها تنذر بالخطر، وأن "المرأة" توشك أن تفقد معناها.
هل ثمة حل لتيهان المرأة الأبدي؟ لا أعلم. فالهيجانات الراهنة لا تأخذ بالحسبان غير الصعوبات السطحية، مهما كانت ذات شأن. ولكن جذور الخصومة بين الجنسين، جذورها ذاتها، لم تكن قد مست قط.
ولهذا السبب، صممت على أن أبحث معكم ماهية المرأة في هذ الكتاب، إذ أن مأساتها أنها كفت عن أن تكون خادمة الحياة، لكي تصبح قناً عاجزاً.
