بعد كتاب (المزهر في علوم اللغة العربية وأنواعها) لجلال الدين السيوطي من الكتب المهمة لدى العلماء ودراسي اللغة العربية؛ بسبب ما إحتواه من مسائل هذه اللغة المعطاء وقضاياها. كما أنه لا يمكن الإستغناء عنه عند دراسة تاريخ العربية عبر عصورها؛ أن السيوطي جمع فيه ما تقدم من آراء وأقوال العلماء في ما يخص نشأة اللغة وتطور الألفاظ. ولذلك قام الكتاب بوضع دراسة وصفية موجزة له لأجل فائدة الطلبة والدراسين ولا سيما أنه إحتوى على أسماء كتب لم تصل إلينا، وكذلك على نصوص من كتب وصلتنا لكنها إفتقدت لهذه النصوص.
وقد بدأت هذه الدراسة تمهيد موجز عن حياة السيوطي تتبعه أربعة فصول مقسمة غلى فقرات تحاشى فيها الكاتب افسهاب والتطويل. وفي التمهيد ناقش سر إختلاف الباحثين في عدد مؤلفات السيوطي وآثاره حيث لم يجد في دراسة سابقة ما يشفي تساؤلات النفس في هذا الجانب.
وعرض في الفصل الأول وصفاً مختصراً لنسخ المزهر المخطوطة ونسخة الكتاب المطبوع. ثم سرد المصادر الني نقل منها السيوطي نصوص مزهره، وهي موزعة بين الكتب والأعلام.
وضمن الفصل الثاني منهج السيوطي في طرائق نقل النصوص وكيفية تصرفه بالعبارات والألفاظ من حيث الحذف والتقديم والتأخير والإختصار.
وجعل الفصل الثالث خاصاً بطرائق الإستدلال كالسماع والإجماع والقياس والتعليل مع التمثيل للشواهد من القرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي الشريف والمنظوم والمنثور من كلام العرب. وأحصي عدد الشعراء الذين إستشهد السيوطي بأشعارهم حسب العصور مع حساب عدد الأبيات الشعرية وأنصاف الأبيات. كما اثبت في هذا الفصل كيف تأثر السيوطي بمنهج أهل الحديث والأصوليين بصفته واحداً منهم.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد ذكر فيه جزءاً من مسائل اللغة والنحو والصرف والأصوات الواردة في المزهر، وأردف ذلك بإثبات النصوص المفقودة من الكتب والمصادر التي إعتمدها السيوطي.
