في هذا المعجم حصر دقيق لشيوخ الإمام أحمد بن حنبل في مسنده وحصر لمرويات كل شيخ فيه، وفيه أيضاً حصر لعدد الأحاديث التي رواها الإمام أحمد في المسند، وقد بلغت (28141) حديثاً. بما فيها المكرر والأحاديث التي رواها عبد الله عن أبيه وجادة. وفيه بيان لمنهج الإمام أحمد في الرواية عن شيوخه، مع ذكر فوائد مهمة تتعلق بهم. وتصحي للأخطاء التي وقعت في النسخة المطبوعة من المسند، مما لها تعلق بشيوخ الإمام أحمد.
وقد وضع المؤلف ثلاثة ملاحق في ذلك، هي: 1-الشيوخ الذين ذكروا خطأ في المسند بأنهم من شيوخ الإمام أحمد، وهم في حقيقة الأمر من شيوخ عبد الله. 2-في الشيوخ الإمام أحمد، وقد جاءوا في المسند من رواية أحمد عنهم مباشرة، وهو خطأ ناجم عن وجود سقط في المسند. 3-تصحيح الأخطاء المطبعية التي وقعت في شيوخ أحمد.
