منذ القرن التاسع عشر، ظلَّ "أحمد بن حنبل" وعلى فتراتٍ متقاربة، موضع دراسةٍ وتأمُّلٍ من جانب الدارسين، مستشرقين وعرباً ومسلمين، فقد جرى الإهتمام به أولاً بإعتباره قائد حركةٍ دينيةٍ متشدِّدة، نهضت في وجه السلطة السياسية، وبعد قيام المملكة العربية السعودية، وصعود السلفية، جرى الإهتمام به بإعتباره رائداً للسلفية التي دعمت قيام حركاتٍ طُهرانية في العالم الإسلامي الحديث.
ولكي لا نبقى في حيِّز التنظير والتأويل، نتّجه إلى كتاب نمرود هورويتز "أحمد بن حنبل" وتشكل "المذهب الحنبلي: الورع في موقع السلطة"، ومن العنوان يتّضح أنّ للمؤلف إهتمامين: شخصية "ابن حنبل" التاريخية الحقيقية، وتأسيسه للتوجُّه العقدي والفقهي، والفقهي على الخصوص.
وهذا الكتاب هو في الأصل أُطروحةُ كُتبت في التسعينيات وهو يركّز على ثلاث مسائل: السيرة الشخصية للإمام أحمد وطابعها الزُهدي والنموذجي، والمحنة ودلالاتها الزمانية والتاريخية، والتفكير الفقهي والمذهب الفقهي لأحمد والحنابلة، وقد صدرت بعده عدة دراساتٌ طوَّرت هذا التوجه أو ذاك، لكنّ محاولة هورويتز تطلُّ متميزةً بينها، ولذلك عملنا على ترجمتها، وقمنا بمراجعتها ونشرها على النحو المعروض.
