(أغرب الأخبار) وهو أمر ينطبق على الكثير من النصوص التي وردت في تضاعيف هذا الكتاب، كقيام العديد من العلماء المؤلفين بحرق كتبهم ودفنها، وتأتي الغرابة أيضاً مما سيكتشفه القارئ من أن ثلاثة أرباع ما ألف خلال العصور الإسلامية قد ضاع فعلاً ولم يعد في حيز الوجود.
أما الشطر من العنوان وهو: (ضياع الحقائق والكتب والآثار) فقد عالجته صفحات الكتاب بتفصيل واضح إذ أن معظم النصوص الواردة أرخت لضياع الكتب وأشارت إلى أسبابه، أما الحقائق فقد تضيع حتى وإن بقي الكتاب في الوجود، إذ قد لا يسجل المؤلف الحقائق كلها، بل قد يكتب أحياناً خلاف الحقيقة، أما كلمة الآثار الواردة في العنوان فهي كما في قاموس المؤلفين تعني جميع أنواع المؤلفات من كتب ورسائل وأجزاء ومجاميع ومجلدات، فهذه الآثار قد تتلف في خزانة كتب تعرضت لحريق أو فيضان أو سرقة أو تغريق.
