"أوسكار ويلد" شخصية أدبية فذة، حملت بذور الفكر الاشتراكي والروح الثورية والنقدية الاجتماعية التي ورثتها عن المجتمع الايرلندي، كما ظهر ذلك عنده في مسرحيته المعروفة بعنوان "العدميون أو فير" وفي عدد من أقاصيصه القصيرة مثل "المارد" الأناني. وكان أوسكار أيضاً يمثل النزعة الإنسانية المثالية التي تعتمد العاطفة الذاتية والمواقف المأساوية كما في قصته الرومانسية "العندليب والزهرة".
فالاهتمام بهذه الأمور العاطفية النبيلة والإنسانية الخالدة والنقدية الاجتماعية قد تشفع لأوسكار روايلد باعتباره قد حقق موقفاً إنسانياً خالداً، ولا شك أن عفن الطبقة الأرستقراطية ونفسخ الطبقة البورجوازية اللتين كانتا تحتضان الأدباء والفنانين، هي التي أفسدت هؤلاء ومنهم أوسكار ويلدا، فإذا بها تقوده إلى تكوين علاقة شاذة بصديقة "الفرد دوغلاس" التي كانت نتيجتها سجن أوسكار لمدة سنتين، خرج بعدهما مهيض الجناح كسير الخاطر، ضعيف الجنان، حتى أنه لم يتمكن من أن يمسك القلم بعد خروجه من السجن، ويخط عملاً أدبياً جديداً سوى قصدته المعروفة أنشودة سجن "ريدنك جيل".
حول هذه السيرة الذاتية لهذا الكاتب يدور هذا الكتيب من سلسلة "أعلام الفكر العالمي" فيتحدث عن حياته، نشأته ثقافته، شخصيته، أعماله الأدبية، الكارثة التي حلت به ودخوله السجن، ثم يتوقف عند بعض أعمال أوسكار ويلد كقصيدته "ريدنك جيل" وبعض القصائد الأخرى التي لم تنشر من قبل وهي هنا تنشر لأول مرة.
